Announcing the Cast for A MURDER IS ANNOUNCED

We were pleased to see faces both new and familiar at auditions today for A Murder is Announced! Those in attendance gave us plenty to deliberate over, and we are pleased to announce the cast list.

STUDENTS: PLEASE READ ALL OF THIS INFORMATION

-If you were cast in a role and choose to accept your role, please write your initials next to your name on the sheet that will be posted on the Thespian bulletin board. This sheet will go up by lunchtime tomorrow, not  first thing in the morning, so by lunchtime, make sure you go and check the board and write your initials.

-If you were not cast in a role, we strongly encourage you to get involved with crew, with publicity or with costuming! There are going to be plenty of opportunities to be a part of this show, and the more the merrier. We would love to have you! In addition, please remember that musical auditions for Tuck Everlasting will be in the first week of January, with audition workshops in December. It will be a much larger cast–potentially three times as large as the cast for the fall play this year.

-ALL cast and crew are required to attend tomorrow’s informational session, beginning after school in the PAC. We will conduct crew leadership interviews for Stage Manager, Head of Lights and Sound, Head of Costumes, Head of Hair and Makeup, Head of Publicity and Head of Construction right away, then move into our safety seminar and then an informational session. Announcing the Cast List for Rabbit Hole

Auditions for Rabbit Hole, the debut production of our brand new Advanced Theatre Series, were this afternoon, and we had an outstanding group of auditions. Every single audition was strong, which certainly made casting a challenge.

We did manage to cast the show, though, and are pleased to announce the cast of Rabbit Hole by David Lindsay-Abaire, being performed in the South Milwaukee High School Performing Arts Center on June 21 and 22.

CAST LAST:

BECCA – Angelita Colin
HOWIE – Jacob McCown
IZZY – Lia Krystowiak
NAT – Isabella Bravo
JASON – Eli Lindner

If you accept your role, please come to the music theory room on Wednesday, April 3 after school to receive your script and participate in an initial cast meeting.

Interviews for production team leadership positions will be held at 3 PM on Wednesday the 3rd in the music theory room as well. These positions are available to anyone who wishes to apply, including anyone who was not cast in this production. There is a place in this show for anyone who wants to be involved, so we encourage you to get involved in one way or another.

Thank you again to those of you who took the risk, auditioned and supported this very first production of a new element of our theater program.

A New Addition to the SMHS Theatre Season

We’re off and running on rehearsals for Singin’ in the Rain, coming to the South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center from March 15 through 17. Tickets will be available shortly, right here and at www.southmilwaukeepac.org.

But for the first time ever, the spring musical won’t be the final performance of our SMHS theatre season. We’re excited to announce the implementation of our Advanced Theatre Series, a concept created by some Thespian leaders, which has officially been given the green light to proceed.

The general aim of this series is to offer students with an interest in a higher-level theatre experience with an opportunity to participate in shows involving a smaller cast and more mature or advanced themes and literature. Throughout the rehearsal process there will be more of an emphasis on textual analysis, more opportunities for students on and offstage to take part in the production and administration processes that are part of putting together a show and more opportunities for student directors to take charge of scenes.

The play we’ve selected for the first-ever Advanced Theatre Series show is Rabbit Hole by David Lindsay-Abaire, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2007.

“Becca and Howie Corbett have a picture-perfect family life in the suburbs of New York until a random, tragic accident takes the life of their four-year old son. Soon after, Becca’s younger, irresponsible sister, Izzy, announces that she is pregnant: there will now be a new child in the family. As Becca and Howie grow apart, Becca’s mother, Nat, badgers Becca about her grieving process, and Jason, the young driver who killed their son, continually shows up to ask forgiveness, the group is on a bumpy road to healing with no road map in sight. Rabbit Hole delves into the complexity of a family navigating deep grief, and learning what it means to live a fruitful life when things fall apart.”

Performances will be June 21 and 22 and 7:30 p.m. in the South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center. Audition dates to be announced.

If this year’s Advanced Theatre Series show goes well, we hope to make it a permanent part of the SMHS Theatre Company season.

We’re excited to give students more opportunities to create theatre, and community members more opportunities to see it! Hope to see you this spring at one of our productions!

Announcing the Cast of SMHS Theatre Company’s “Singin’ in the Rain”

We were so thrilled to have a fantastic turnout for Singin’ in the Rain auditions! We had our callbacks today for the main roles, and were thoroughly impressed with the talent that was on display. After deliberation, we have completed the cast list for the show.

Students: if you accept your role, please visit the Thespian Call Board on Wednesday and initial next to your name.

Wednesday after school at 3 PM we will have crew leadership position interviews. Following those interviews at 3:30 we will have the first information and introductory session for the musical. This will include script passout, overview of the rehearsal process and the required SMPAC safety seminar. All cast and crew are required to attend.

Finally, a note about the ensemble designations. “General Ensemble” also contains other small speaking roles that are not listed on this cast list. Those roles will be assigned during rehearsal. “Dance Ensemble” is a separate ensemble of featured dancers and singers for the songs “All I Do is Dream of You,” “Beautiful Girls” and “Broadway Melody.” These are the most tap-heavy roles in the production. Announcing our 2019 Spring Musical!

We are excited to announce our spring musical for the 2018-2019 school year, Singin’ in the Rain!

Adapted from the 1952 movie of the same name, the plot closely adheres to the original. Set in Hollywood in the waning days of the silent screen era, it focuses on romantic lead Don Lockwood, his sidekick Cosmo Brown, aspiring actress Kathy Selden, and Lockwood’s leading lady Lina Lamont, whose less-than-dulcet vocal tones make her an unlikely candidate for stardom in talking pictures.

According to Music Theater International:

Singin’ in the Rain has all the makings of a Tinseltown tabloid headline – the starlet, the leading man and a love affair that could change lives and make or break careers! In silent movies, Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont are a hot item but, behind the scenes, things aren’t always as they appear on the big screen! Meanwhile, Lina’s squeaky voice might be the end of her career in ‘talking pictures’ without the help of a talented young actress to do the talking and singing for her.”

Auditions and callbacks for Singin’ in the Rain will be held January 7 and 8, 2019, with an audition workshop on January 4. Auditions will consist of singing and dancing, with some reading of lines from the script.

Audition materials will be available on www.smhstheatre.org sometime in December before winter break. Show dates are March 15-17, 2019 in the South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center.

If you are interested in getting involved as a volunteer for the show, we are always in need of help for costuming, set construction, makeup and more. Contact us to learn how you can get involved, we greatly appreciate any help you’re willing to lend us!

We look forward to taking on this challenging, classic show this spring!

Announcing our 2018 Fall Play

We are pleased to announce that South Milwaukee High School Theatre Company’s fall play will be Almost, Maine by John Cariani!

“Welcome to Almost, Maine, a place that’s so far north, it’s almost not in the United States. It’s almost in Canada. And it’s not quite a town, because its residents never got around to getting organized. So it almost doesn’t exist. One cold, clear, winter night, as the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky above, the residents of Almost, Maine, find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and hilarious ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. But the bruises heal, and the hearts mend—almost—in this delightful midwinter night’s dream.”

Almost, Maine has been one of the more popular high school shows in America over the last several years for its touching depictions of love and loss in unique, magical ways. The show features a series of vignettes loosely tied together by these themes and the fictional northeastern woodsy setting.

Shows will run November 9th and 10th at 7:30 p.m. and November 11th at 2:00 p.m., all in the South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center. Tickets will be available to the public soon.

Audition date and information will be available soon on the website, and we will also publicize the information on our official Facebook page, so be sure to “like” and follow us there.
